Rich Dark Chocolate Cake
Ingredients
For the Cake:
- 1 ¾ cups (220g) all-purpose flour
- ¾ cup (65g) unsweetened cocoa powder (preferably dark cocoa)
- 1 ½ tsp baking powder
- 1 ½ tsp baking soda
- 1 tsp salt
- 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup (240ml) whole milk
- ½ cup (120ml) vegetable oil (or melted butter)
- 2 tsp pure vanilla extract
- 1 cup (240ml) boiling water (or strong brewed coffee for richer flavor)
For the Dark Chocolate Ganache (Optional):
- 8 oz (225g) dark chocolate, chopped
- 1 cup (240ml) heavy cream

For the Cake:
Preheat the Oven:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch (23 cm) round cake pans or line with parchment paper.Prepare Dry Ingredients:
In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Stir in the sugar.Mix Wet Ingredients:
In another bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract.Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients:
Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until smooth.Add Boiling Water/Coffee:
Slowly stir in the boiling water or coffee. The batter will be thin—that’s normal!Bake:
Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.Cool:
Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
For the Ganache (Optional):
- Heat the cream in a saucepan over medium heat until it just starts to simmer (don’t boil).
- Pour the hot cream over the chopped dark chocolate in a heatproof bowl. Let it sit for 5 minutes, then stir until smooth.
- Allow the ganache to cool slightly, then spread it over the cooled cakes.
Tips:
- For an extra moist cake, brush the layers with simple syrup before frosting.
- Serve with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for a divine dessert!
